Usage and user behavior
Commercial and industrial buildings are usually used only during the week. Likewise the operating time of the heating system is shortened because of the lower temperatures in comparison to the residential buildings. It makes sense to adapt the heating system to the users’ behavior. The less a building is insulated, the more reduced should be the heating times. It is important that the energy be available when needed and in adequate supply.
Short instead of continuous ventilation
A substantial aspect of user behavior is ventilating: whether by ventilation system or window, it is always advisable to limit air to a necessary measure. Therefore in residences, only briefly cross-ventilate. Ventilation systems should be operated only if necessary. The same applies for exhaust systems.
Light management to meet user requirements
If it is not automated, lighting is subject to the user behavior. People quickly notice if it is too dark, but unfortunately not when there is too much light. Only conscious reminding makes people switch off unnecessary lighting. Therefore the use of light management systems makes sense. They adapt to necessary light intensity and turn the light off if nobody is present. Depending upon conditions, lighting automation can save up to 80% of energy.
A lot of light can be likewise saved by simple measures (see Lighting).By conscious behavior, energy can be saved without large expenditures
