Run on ENERGY GLOBE Award 2009
Traunkirchen – The ENERGY GLOBE mailbox is overflowing; mail carriers are bringing packages – UPS, DHL, express mail from the whole world. On the submission deadline for the ENERGY GLOBE Award 2009 it seems that everyone wants to participate. Over 100 nations from all parts of the earth have already submitted projects, announced ENERGY GLOBE initiator Wolfgang Neumann regarding the sensational interest in the world’s most prominent environmental award. Since 1999, each year the Award distinguishes projects that focus on energy efficiency, the use of renewables and conservation of our resources such as water and energy. Awards are presented at regional, national and international levels in the categories Earth, Fire, Water, Air and Youth.
This year’s list of ENERGY GLOBE submissions reads like a Who’s Who: Nations include the Vatican, where St. Peter’s Basilica has been using a photovoltaic system for power since 2008 and the cafeteria will soon be cooled with solar energy. McDonalds has established its first energy-autonomous restaurant in the vicinity of Bremen, Germany. The Norwegian oil giant StatoilHydro is harvesting clean energy with the world’s first floating 2.3 MW wind turbine plant, Hywind. North Korea is premiering with a biogas pilot project at the Pyongyang Infocenter for New Technologies. In addition to large corporations such as Schott Solar and the Spanish Iberdrola, many small but impressive initiatives solve a wide range of local energy, water and waste problems sustainably and thereby significantly improve the quality of life.
As always, Austria is in the pole position: This year over 100 exciting projects have been submitted from all of Austria’s provinces by such sources as the Federal Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry, Environment and Water Management, the Federal Office for Environment, Brau Union (brewery), Böhler Forging, Salzburg AG (power company), Wiener Neustädter Stadtwerke (utility company), a fuel cell boat by Frauscher and do-it-yourself geniuses. The ENERGY GLOBE Jury has a busy summer and autumn ahead.
The award ceremonies begin in autumn at the regional level. Austria’s best environmental solutions will be showcased on 27 November at the ENERGY GLOBE Austria Gala in Wels. The ENERGY GLOBE World Awards 2009 are planned for the spring in the realm of a globally broadcast TV Gala in the European Parliament in Brussels.
