The Malmö Environment Department supports public photovoltaic projects and thereby promotes CO2-free energy production.

Particularly in cities, air quality is especially important and difficult to improve. The use of environmentally friendly and CO2 emission-free solar energy provides a solution that abandons fossil fuels.

The Swedish city of Malmö is committed to this approach and goes one step beyond: efficient photovoltaic power plants are being built that are perfectly and visibly integrated into the city. They not only provide sustainable energy, they also successfully advertise for solar energy.

“In the past three years I have received over 4000 visitors in guided tours and seminars. People have an enormous interest in our experience,” says Anna Cornander manager of the Solar City project.

Among the project results is the largest photovoltaic plant in Scandinavia. It was built in 2007 and with 1500 m2 collector surface area it covers the complete power requirements of 40 households. On sunny days, the Museum of Technology is 100% energy independent. In 2009 the first solar-Stirling demonstration plant was built to produce power from heat. A clean, low-CO2 future is possible, as exemplified by the solar city Malmö.
